It was a full on Seventies spectacular at today’s Meadham Kirchoff show. The catwalk was transformed into a Saturday Night Fever-style nightclub complete with a light-up, disco floor and tinsel strewn everywhere.
It would be easy to see this as nonsense but rather it's a sign of their of the almost militaristic commitment to a theme: “the thing is that disco originally brought all sorts of subversive groups together through music: different cultures, sexualities, attitudes - and this really was just like that with a massive sense of celebration.”
The models - dressed in yellow beehives or New Wave cartoons with fluro orange quiffs - walked down the catwalk to a soundtrack of Abba and Mariah Carey throwing glitter as they went. Amongst the theatrics the garments matched the set: chiffon dresses, massive fur coats in bold stripes, and stoles in red, black and yellow, trousers made of tinsel tiers, gilded brocade and colouful denim jackets covered in retro transfers and Breakfast Club badges. Amazing!
